Katie Akey HBA, JD

Katie earned her law degree from the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law in 2020 and was awarded the Dean’s Medal for the Faculty of Law, recognizing her as the highest ranking graduating student in her class. She completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History at the University of Toronto in 2011 and a diploma in Aboriginal Community and Social Development at Georgian College in 2014.

Prior to law school, Katie enjoyed an enriching career in community program development, working in partnership with over 20 First Nations across Ontario on various community driven initiatives. These focused on historical and community land use planning, environmental and cultural program development, and the design and implementation of localized governance and community consultation systems.

Katie draws on her unique experience to animate her Family, Labour and Employment, and Aboriginal Law practice at Buset LLP. Whether working for individuals or organizations, Katie understands that often, people don’t just want a lawyer—they want a relationship built on mutual trust and understanding. She’s looking forward with working closely with her clients to provide the right solution for their particular needs and circumstances, drawing on the depth of experience of the lawyers and staff at Buset LLP, and blending it with her own unique path to the Bar.
